High Schoolers Get a 'SSIP' of Engineering & Computer Science
For the fourth consecutive summer, rising junior and senior high school students explored engineering and computer science in the one-week SEAS Summer Immersion Program (SSIP). This year, 16 students from across Washington state and beyond gathered for the residential camp.
Interactive STEM activities included programming robots, using the Scrum framework in an engineering management simulation, coding in Python to customize LED matrix panels, exploring river system complexities in the lab to understand infrastructure’s impact on natural environments, and shorter hands-on experiences with traffic flow modeling and soldering printed circuit boards. College prep sessions — including admissions and financial aid presentations - provided insights into the path to higher education, with a spotlight on attending ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´.
By working alongside ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´’s faculty and undergraduates, the SSIP students saw firsthand how engineering touches every part of society.
Each evening featured guest speakers from a range of engineering and computer science fields, who shared inspiring stories about their career journeys. Glorilyn Maw, Lyssa Blood, and Monica Fishburn are all ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ engineering alumni, and Rebecca Long is a computer science graduate of Eastern Washington University. More about our speakers at the SSIP page.
