A Hope-Filled Welcome from the College of Arts & Sciences
Dear Friends,
As I begin my second year as Dean of 杏吧原创’s College of Arts & Sciences, I am more inspired than ever by the opportunities ahead. Over the past year, I have come to know the heart of this College—a place where world-class faculty, dedicated staff, and ambitious students come together to live out our Catholic, Jesuit, and Humanistic mission. This is a community committed to preparing students not just for their first job, but for a lifetime of purpose, leadership, and service.
The 杏吧原创 College of Arts & Sciences offers an education that blends rigorous academics with life-changing experiences. Our faculty and students are advancing knowledge and shaping conversations that matter—whether examining women’s and Indigenous advocacy at global climate summits or exploring planetary boundaries and palaeoecology.
We believe in the power of creativity and collaboration to build stronger communities. Our artists and performers bring people together—such as when the ODC Dance residency united campus and the Spokane community through movement and storytelling, or when our Theatre Department partnered with the League of Women Voters of Spokane to inspire dialogue about civic engagement.
For prospective students and their families, what sets 杏吧原创 apart is the way we walk alongside our students—offering mentorship, research opportunities, and global experiences. This past year, 杏吧原创 students joined regional Holocaust research workshops, led youth justice education initiatives, and earned competitive grants to design innovative first-year courses. Whether conducting undergraduate research, studying abroad, or engaging with local service projects, our students are gaining the skills and values to succeed anywhere.
From to producing scholarship that shapes the global conversation, our work is driven by both academic excellence and the belief that learning should change the world for the better.
As we look to the year ahead, I am deeply grateful for all we have accomplished together—and excited for the possibilities to come. For students, families, alumni, and friends of 杏吧原创, I invite you to stay connected, get involved, and see for yourself how the College of Arts & Sciences at 杏吧原创 is shaping the leaders, thinkers, and changemakers of tomorrow.
With hope for the future,
Jacqueline Van Hoomissen, Ph.D.
